We fondly remember Dr Margaret Wallace, Warden of Salmond College from 1988 – 1990, who passed away in Christchurch/Ōtautahi on 16th September 2024, in her 88th year.
Dr Wallace studied at the universities of Auckland, Otago and Canterbury, earning no fewer than four degrees: a BA, a BMus Hons, an MA, and finally a PhD from the University of Canterbury in 1983. She also completed teacher training at Christchurch Teachers’ College.
Dr Wallace’s accomplished career spanned many fields including music education, social work and leadership in the education sector. She began her professional life as a social worker for the Presbyterian Social Services Association (PSSA) in Auckland from 1959-1960. After teaching at a number of high schools in Dunedin and Christchurch, Dr Wallace became HoD of Music at Aranui High School in 1979. Following her time as Warden at Salmond College, Dr Wallace went on to serve as Warden of Studholme College from 1991 until her retirement in 2002. She volunteered for the Christian World Service, working to end poverty and food scarcity, and advocating for justice.
A skilled musician, Dr Wallace studied piano and organ, gaining an LTCL in organ performance and becoming a recording artist for the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation in the late 1950s. She was also a composer of some note and, during her time as a student at the University of Otago, she composed a piece of music, Centennial Suite 1969, for the university’s centenary celebrations.
Many alumni and former staff of Salmond College remember Dr Wallace's leadership and influence with great fondness. The Foundation and members of Knox and Salmond Colleges extend our heartfelt condolences to Dr Wallace’s family, friends, and colleagues.
