Salmond College Highlights 2024

Volunteering

The culture of volunteering and community service has been represented through a number of student-led initiatives at Salmond College. None has been more successful than the Baking Club, a group that meets weekly to bake for charities such as the Dunedin Night Shelter, Bad Bitches Baking, and some of the college’s neighbours.

Inter-college Competition

2024 has been Salmond’s most successful year ever for the College in inter-college competition. Of the 15 colleges, Salmond was first in Cultural, second in Sport, and second in Games – an excellent result, considering the size of the college.

Serving Up Excellence

The Salmond College food services team does a great job and their mahi is definitely a highlight of the college.

Salmond Legends

Salmond College celebrates those who stand out in the community and become ‘Salmond Legends’. At the start of the year, the Head of Salmond, Nick Bates, challenges the residents to be someone who puts their heart and soul into things, considers ways to serve the community, is prepared to grow and, most of all, is authentically themselves – in other words is a ‘Salmond Legend’. The ‘Legends’ are presented with a t-shirt at the college’s final formal dinner.

Cultural Diversity

The growth in openness to a wide variety of cultures has been a highlight of the last few years at Salmond College. Professor Patrick Vakaoti leads regular Talanoa (collaborative and respectful group discussion) with students and staff, and brings a growing awareness and acknowledgement of Pacific cultures.
